Spark plugs: when to change them

A car that struggles to start in the morning, a rough idle, the odd hesitation under acceleration: often the spark plugs are behind these signs. On petrol engines, the spark plugs provide the spark that starts combustion and last on average between 30,000 and 120,000 km depending on the type. This article covers what they do, and how often to change them.

What do spark plugs do and how often should they be changed?

The spark plug creates, between its electrodes, the spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture in the cylinder. Starting, smooth running and fuel consumption all depend on that spark. Over time the electrode wears down and the spark grows weaker.

How long they last depends on the material. Copper plugs need changing every 30,000 to 50,000 km, while platinum or iridium plugs reach 80,000 to 120,000 km. Diesel engines have no ignition plugs but glow plugs, which aid cold starting and are usually replaced around 100,000 km. Your service book always gives the correct interval, and a vehicle service is the right time to check them.

Spark plugs are replaced as a full set, never just one, to keep the engine running evenly. Sticking to the recommended interval is the best way to avoid misfires, which over time strain the ignition coils and can damage the catalytic converter.

Each plug works with its own coil, which supplies the high voltage. When a coil weakens, the symptoms look like a faulty plug, so it pays to check them together. The gap between the electrodes matters too: if wear widens it too much, the spark struggles to jump and the engine runs less smoothly.

Several factors shorten plug life. Short, cold trips encourage deposits, poor fuel or oil burning fouls the electrodes, and fitting plugs of the wrong heat range harms combustion. Always using the type your manufacturer specifies is the simplest way to make them last.

A plug's appearance tells you a lot: a light insulator means healthy combustion, while black, wet deposits point to a rich mixture or oil burning. Iridium and platinum plugs last longer because the thinner, tougher electrode keeps a stable spark even at high mileage.

Signs of worn spark plugs

Worn plugs leave clear clues in how the engine behaves. The most common signs are hard starting, a rough idle, hesitation under acceleration, higher fuel consumption and, in many cases, the engine warning light. A misfiring engine is often the clearest signal. Because starting problems can also come from the battery, it is worth knowing when to test your car battery too.

Ignoring worn plugs is not trivial: misfires send unburnt fuel towards the exhaust and can damage the catalytic converter. Fuel consumption also rises, because the engine runs less efficiently.

To make them last, always replace the full set with the correct type, do not ignore small misfires and, if you drive mostly in town, take an occasional longer run that helps clean the combustion chamber. Acting quickly on a misfire protects the coils and the catalytic converter.

On recent engines the plugs often sit recessed under the coil and must be tightened to a precise torque, so it is a garage job, which also reads the misfire count through diagnostics and checks the coils. Acting early avoids replacing a catalytic converter.

The quote should state the plug type and any coils. Getting the torque right matters: too loose or too tight, a plug can damage the cylinder head thread. That is why it pays to trust someone with the right tools.
