Shock absorbers

Shock absorber replacement & car suspension repair
The car suspension — and the shock absorbers in particular — do far more than cushion the bumps. They keep the tyres in contact with the road through corners, braking and uneven surfaces, control body roll and, crucially, reduce braking distances. Worn shock absorbers are a serious safety issue, not just a comfort problem: research from European road safety bodies shows that worn shocks can increase the stopping distance by several metres from 30 mph.
At MOTRIO garages we carry out shock absorber replacement, coil spring replacement and full suspension repair: inspection of struts, springs, control arms, anti-roll bar links, bushes and ball joints. Our technicians work on all makes and models, use manufacturer-equivalent quality parts and back every job with a 1-year warranty on parts and labour, with a post-installation road test included.

How MOTRIO can help
Shock absorber service at MOTRIO: everything you need to know
MOTRIO garages carry out the full range of car suspension services on all makes and models, including light commercial vehicles and hybrids. The service includes shock absorber replacement (front or rear, always in pairs), coil spring replacement, suspension repair (control arms, bushes, ball joints, anti-roll bar links), visual leak inspection, and a full diagnostic of the suspension system with post-installation road test. Shock absorber prices are confirmed by upfront quote before every job. The service is available by appointment at MOTRIO garages across the UK, with manufacturer-equivalent quality parts and a 1-year warranty on parts and labour.

What other services does MOTRIO offer?
In addition to car suspension, MOTRIO garages offer a full range of services for your vehicle. From regular maintenance to the braking system, from tyres to the battery:
Tyres → uneven tyre wear often signals worn shocks
Braking system → brake pads, discs (handling combines suspension+ brakes)
MOT → pre-MOT check (suspension is a MOT checkpoint)
Electronic diagnostics → diagnosis of suspension noise and vibration
How do I know if my shock absorbers need replacing?
Signs that your shock absorbers need checking include a vibrating steering wheel, reduced braking efficiency, decreased control when cornering, an increased risk of aquaplaning on wet roads even at low speeds, and abnormal tyre wear. Other red flags to watch out for:
The car keeps bouncing after a speed bump or pothole (more than 2–3 oscillations indicates worn shocks).
Nose-dive when braking firmly: the front of the car drops sharply forward.
Body roll in corners: excessive lean when turning at moderate speeds.
Knocking or thumping noise from the suspension over bumps.
Visible oil leaks on the body of the shock absorber — a sure sign the internal seal has failed.
Uneven or cupped tyre wear with bald patches.
These are the moments to book a suspension diagnostic at a MOTRIO garage. The check takes around 30 minutes and gives you a clear picture of what's worn, what's borderline, and what's still good — with an upfront quote before any work is carried out.
How often and why should shock absorbers be checked and replaced?
We recommend you have your shock absorbers inspected every 12,500 miles and replaced approximately every 50,000 miles, depending on vehicle usage and road conditions. UK roads with potholes, speed bumps and heavy weather conditions can shorten this interval significantly.
Signs of wear may include:
Excessive bouncing after speed bumps or potholes
Reduced stability when cornering or on uneven roads
Unusual noises (knocking or squeaking) from the suspension
Uneven tyre wear
Maintaining shock absorbers in good condition is essential for your vehicle's safety, comfort and road holding. Replace them in pairs (both front, or both rear) to maintain balanced handling — fitting a new shock on one side and an old one on the other will create uneven braking and unpredictable cornering.
Is it dangerous to drive with faulty shock absorbers?
Yes. Driving with worn shock absorbers is a serious safety issue: it increases braking distances, reduces vehicle stability and accelerates wear on other suspension components, tyres and even the brake system.
In concrete terms, worn shocks can:
Add several metres to the stopping distance from 30 mph — enough to turn a near-miss into a collision.
Reduce the effectiveness of ABS and ESP: if the tyre loses contact with the road, the electronic systems can't help.
Increase aquaplaning risk on wet roads, because the tyre struggles to maintain proper grip.
Cause MOT failure: shock absorbers are a specific MOT checkpoint, and visible oil leaks or poor performance lead to an automatic fail.
Damage other suspension components: springs, bushes, anti-roll bar links and even the gearbox mounts wear faster.
If in doubt, book a quick suspension diagnostic at a MOTRIO garage: 30 minutes can make the difference between a safe drive and an avoidable accident.
What does it mean if my shock absorber is leaking?
A leaking shock absorber is one of the most reliable signs that the component has reached the end of its service life. Shock absorbers contain hydraulic oil sealed inside the body of the unit; when the seal fails, oil leaks out and the shock can no longer damp the spring properly.
How to spot a leak:
Oil film on the shock absorber body — visible when you look behind the wheel.
Wet patch under the car after parking on a clean surface.
Dust and dirt stuck to a specific section of the shock — usually around the seal.
Important: a leaking shock absorber is an automatic MOT failure. And replacing only the leaking one is rarely a good idea: shocks wear at similar rates, so the matching one on the same axle is usually close to failing too. At MOTRIO we always recommend replacing them in pairs (both front or both rear) to keep the suspension balanced — and we provide an upfront quote before any work begins.
