Clutch

Clutch replacement, kit fitting & diagnostics
A clutch in good condition is essential for smooth gear changes, a healthy gearbox and efficient power transmission from the engine to the wheels. When the clutch starts slipping, judders, becomes hard to disengage or the pedal feels soft, the cause is almost always wear of the friction disc, the pressure plate, the release bearing or the flywheel — components that work together as a single clutch kit and tend to fail at similar rates.
At MOTRIO garages we carry out the full range of clutch services: clutch replacement (disc, pressure plate and release bearing), full clutch kit fitting, dual mass flywheel inspection and replacement when needed, clutch diagnostics and analysis of slipping symptoms. Replacing the clutch in time prevents damage to the gearbox and avoids more expensive repairs later on. We work on all makes and models, use manufacturer-equivalent quality parts and back every job with a 1-year warranty on parts and labour, with an upfront written quote before any work begins.

How MOTRIO can help
Clutch service at MOTRIO: everything you need to know
MOTRIO garages carry out the full range of clutch services on all makes and models, including light commercial vehicles and hybrids. The service includes clutch replacement with disc, pressure plate and release bearing (the complete clutch kit), dual mass flywheel inspection and replacement where needed, gearbox oil drain and refill, check of the clutch master and slave cylinder on hydraulic systems, and post-installation road test. Clutch replacement prices are confirmed by upfront quote before every job. The service is available by appointment at MOTRIO garages across the UK, with manufacturer-equivalent quality parts and a 1-year warranty on parts and labour.

What other services does MOTRIO offer?
In addition to clutch replacement, MOTRIO garages offer a full range of services for your vehicle. From regular maintenance to the braking system, from tyres to the battery:
Timing belt & water pump → timing belt replacement (same gearbox-out access)
Vehicle maintenance → gearbox oil change and full service
Electronic diagnostics → diagnosis of driveline and gear-shift symptoms
Braking system → brake pads, discs and brake fluid
When should the clutch be replaced?
The average lifespan of a clutch is between 60,000 and 95,000 miles, though this varies significantly based on driving style and usage. Some clutches fail at 40,000 miles in heavy stop-start city driving; others last well over 120,000 miles on motorway use.
Replace the clutch when you notice any of these symptoms:
Clutch slip: the engine revs rise but the car doesn't accelerate proportionally, especially in higher gears or going uphill — the most reliable sign of a worn clutch.
Soft or spongy pedal: the clutch pedal feels lighter than usual or doesn't return properly.
High biting point: the clutch only engages when the pedal is almost fully released — sign of a worn disc.
Difficulty changing gear: gears that grind, refuse to engage, or jump out under load.
Burning smell: a sharp, acrid smell after stop-start traffic or hill starts — the friction disc is overheating.
Juddering on pull-away: the car shakes when you release the clutch from a standstill.
If you spot one or more of these, get a clutch diagnostic at a MOTRIO garage. Driving on with a worn clutch can damage the flywheel and the gearbox, turning a clutch replacement into a much more expensive repair.
What are the signs of clutch wear?
The most common signs of clutch wear are slipping during acceleration, an abnormal pedal feel, suspicious noises, or difficulty shifting gears. Pay attention also to these less obvious red flags:
Clutch slipping in fourth or fifth gear under load: the first gears to reveal wear are usually the higher ones, because the torque transmitted is greater.
Pedal that vibrates when pressed: often a sign of pressure plate problems.
Rattling or whining noise with the clutch pedal up: potential release bearing wear.
Rattling that disappears when you press the clutch: potential dual mass flywheel wear.
Driving habits that shorten clutch life:
Riding the clutch (keeping a foot resting on the pedal).
Holding the car on a hill with the clutch instead of the handbrake.
Frequent heavy stop-start city driving.
Towing or carrying heavy loads regularly.
Launching the car with high revs.
A clutch diagnostic at a MOTRIO garage takes around half an hour and clarifies whether the issue is the clutch itself, the flywheel, the hydraulic system or the gearbox — avoiding unnecessary part replacements.
How much does a clutch replacement cost?
The cost of a clutch replacement depends on three main factors:
Vehicle make and model: a basic supermini will cost much less than a luxury saloon or a 4WD.
Type of clutch: a standard clutch kit costs less than a dual mass flywheel kit, which on some modern engines is almost always recommended.
Access to the gearbox: on some cars the gearbox can be removed in 2–3 hours; on others, especially front-wheel drive transverse engines, the labour can easily exceed 6–8 hours.
What's almost always included in a full clutch replacement at a MOTRIO garage:
Friction disc, pressure plate and release bearing (the complete clutch kit).
Inspection — and replacement when needed — of the flywheel or dual mass flywheel.
Gearbox oil drain and refill.
Bleeding of the hydraulic system (on cars with a hydraulic clutch).
Post-installation road test.
MOTRIO garages always provide an upfront written quote before any work begins, with full breakdown of parts and labour. No surprises at the till.
What is a dual mass flywheel and when does it need replacing?
A dual mass flywheel (DMF) is a more complex version of the traditional single-mass flywheel, made of two metal discs connected by internal springs. It absorbs torsional vibrations from modern engines — especially high-torque diesels and downsized turbo petrols — making gear changes smoother and protecting the gearbox.
How to recognise a failing dual mass flywheel:
Rattling noise at idle that disappears when you press the clutch.
Strong vibration when starting the engine or when shutting it down.
Difficulty engaging gears, especially first and reverse.
Juddering on pull-away even with a fairly new clutch.
Driving with a failed DMF can damage the gearbox bearings and the crankshaft thrust washers.
On a car fitted with a DMF, MOTRIO technicians always inspect the flywheel during clutch replacement and recommend replacing both together when wear is found: doing the job in two stages costs nearly double in labour, because the gearbox needs to be removed twice. The DMF typically lasts 100,000–150,000 miles, but heavy stop-start driving and frequent towing can shorten its life.
