MOT

MOT check & inspection
At MOTRIO garages we carry out a complete pre-MOT check to get your car ready for the official MOT test and avoid the stress of an unexpected fail. Our trained technicians go through the same key areas inspected during the official MOT — brakes, lights, emissions, suspension and tyres — to spot any issues in advance, with enough time to put things right before the test date.
A pre-MOT inspection is one of the simplest ways to save time and money: fixing a worn brake pad or a blown bulb before the MOT is far cheaper than a retest, and it keeps your MOT due date stable. We work on all makes and models, including vehicles still under manufacturer warranty, light commercial vehicles, hybrids and electric cars, and we back every job with a 1-year warranty on parts and labour.

How MOTRIO can help
Pre-MOT inspection with MOTRIO: everything you need to know
MOTRIO garages carry out a complete pre-MOT check on all makes and models, including cars under manufacturer warranty, light commercial vehicles, hybrids and electric cars. The inspection covers all the key items checked during the official MOT test: braking system (pads, discs, fluid, handbrake), emissions and exhaust, lights and mandatory equipment (headlights, indicators, brake lights, number plate, horn, wipers), and a visual inspection of suspension and tyres (tread depth, condition, pressure). MOT prices are confirmed by upfront quote before every job. The service is available by appointment at MOTRIO garages across the UK, with a 1-year warranty on parts and labour on any work carried out.

What other services does MOTRIO offer?
In addition to the pre-MOT check, MOTRIO garages offer a full range of services for your vehicle. From regular maintenance to the braking system, from tyres to the battery:
Braking system → brake pads, discs and brake fluid (MOT checkpoint)
Shock absorbers & suspension → suspension repair and shock replacement (MOT checkpoint)
Wiper blades & visibility → wipers, windscreen and bulbs (MOT checkpoint)
Exhaust → exhaust repair, catalytic converter and DPF cleaning
When is it advisable to carry out a pre-MOT inspection?
We recommend performing the pre-MOT check a few weeks before your scheduled MOT test date. This ensures you have sufficient time to carry out any necessary repairs should they be required, without being forced to pay for a retest or to leave the car off the road.
A good rule of thumb:
2 to 4 weeks before the MOT due date: ideal window for the pre-MOT inspection. Long enough to source any parts (brake pads, bulbs, wipers, tyres) without rushing.
After 30,000 miles or 12 months from the last MOT: a good moment for an interim check, even if the MOT is not imminent.
Before a long trip or winter: a pre-MOT-style inspection is a smart way to spot worn tyres, weak brakes or failing bulbs before they become a problem on the road.
You can check your MOT due date for free on the official GOV.UK MOT history service. From there, you have up to one month minus a day before the expiry date to renew your MOT without losing your current anniversary date.
When does my car need an MOT?
In Great Britain, the first MOT test is required when your car turns 3 years old, counting from the date of first registration on the V5C logbook. After that, an MOT is required every 12 months.
Quick reference:
Cars and motorcycles: first MOT at 3 years, then every year.
Light goods vehicles (up to 3,500 kg): first MOT at 3 years, then every year.
Taxis, ambulances and minibuses: MOT required from the first year of registration.
Vehicles over 40 years old: MOT-exempt (Vehicle of Historic Interest), provided they have not been substantially modified.
Northern Ireland: the testing system is different and managed by DVA, with different age thresholds.
You can check the exact MOT due date of your vehicle by entering your registration number on the free GOV.UK MOT history service. You can sign up for free reminders and book your next MOT up to one month minus a day before the expiry date to keep the same renewal date.
What is checked during the MOT test?
An official MOT test inspects all the key safety and environmental items on your vehicle. The MOT checklist includes:
Brakes: pads, discs, drums, brake fluid level, handbrake and ABS warning light.
Tyres and wheels: tread depth (minimum 1.6 mm), condition, pressure, wheel rim and tyre size compatibility.
Lights: headlights, indicators, brake lights, fog lights, hazard lights, number plate light, headlight aim.
Suspension and steering: shock absorbers, springs, joints, steering wheel play and power steering.
Exhaust and emissions: emission levels (CO, HC, smoke for diesel), exhaust system condition and noise.
Bodywork and structure: corrosion in safety-critical areas, sharp edges, doors, mirrors, wipers, washers and horn.
Seatbelts and seats: operation, condition, anchorage points and SRS (airbag) warning light.
VIN and number plate: vehicle identification number and number plate legibility.
Booking a pre-MOT check at a MOTRIO garage covers all the same items, so you know exactly where you stand before the official test — no last-minute surprises and no extra costs for a retest.
What happens if my car fails the MOT?
If your car fails the MOT, it is issued a Refusal of an MOT test certificate (VT30) listing the failure items, classified as ‘dangerous' or ‘major'. From that moment, you cannot legally drive the vehicle on public roads, except to and from a pre-booked appointment to repair the faults or to a re-test.
How to handle a failed MOT:
Repair the listed faults: at the same testing centre or at any garage you trust, like a MOTRIO garage.
Free or reduced-fee retest: if you leave the car at the original testing centre and have it retested within 10 working days, the retest is often free; if you take the car away and bring it back, a partial retest is usually available within the same window.
Driving without a valid MOT: you can be fined up to £1,000 and the offence can affect your insurance.
A pre-MOT inspection at a MOTRIO garage is the simplest way to avoid all this: any faults are picked up and repaired in advance, with a written report, a transparent quote before any extra work is carried out, and a 1-year warranty on parts and labour.
