Battery

Car battery replacement, fitting & check
The car battery is one of the most critical components of your vehicle: every electrical and electronic system on board depends on it, from the starter motor to the lights, the engine management unit, the infotainment system and the safety electronics. After harsh winters and hot summers, the battery loses capacity, and what worked yesterday may simply refuse to start the car tomorrow. Temperature swings, short trips and an ageing battery are the main causes of unexpected breakdowns.
At MOTRIO garages we carry out the full range of car battery services: battery check, car battery replacement, fitting, and a complete diagnostic of the charging circuit (alternator, starter, voltage regulator). Our technicians work on all makes and models, including vehicles still under manufacturer warranty, light commercial vehicles, hybrids and electric cars. Every job is backed by a 1-year warranty on parts and labour, with old battery disposal handled in line with environmental regulations.

What other services does MOTRIO offer?
In addition to car battery replacement, MOTRIO garages offer a full range of services for your vehicle. From regular maintenance to the braking system, from tyres to the air conditioning:
Electronic diagnostics → electrical fault diagnosis and starting issues
Air conditioning → aircon regas (heavy battery load in summer)
Vehicle maintenance → full check-up including charging system
Hybrid & electric service → EV traction battery and hybrid maintenance
What is the life expectancy of a car battery?
On average, a car battery lasts between 4 and 5 years. However, to avoid unexpected breakdowns, we recommend you have it checked regularly, every 18,500 miles or every 2 years, depending on vehicle usage. Battery life can be significantly shorter or longer depending on:
Driving style: short, frequent trips don't give the alternator enough time to fully recharge the battery, which shortens its life.
Climate: UK winters with sub-zero temperatures put extra strain on the battery; hot summers accelerate internal corrosion.
Vehicle electronics: modern cars with stop-start, infotainment, ADAS and dashcams draw more power even when the engine is off.
Type of battery: standard lead-acid batteries last 4–5 years; AGM and EFB batteries fitted to stop-start cars last 5–7 years on average.
If you're approaching the 4-year mark — or if winter is coming — a car battery check at a MOTRIO garage is the simplest way to spot a weakening battery before it leaves you stranded.
How can I check the health of my car battery?
To monitor your car battery condition, look out for the following signs:
Difficulty starting the vehicle: if your car struggles to start or takes longer than usual, it may indicate a weak or failing battery.
Dimming headlights: weak or flickering headlights can be a sign that the battery is not providing sufficient power.
Visible staining or corrosion around the battery: inspect the battery for any visible stains, corrosion or build-up on the terminals, which can affect performance and indicate that maintenance is required.
Battery warning light on the dashboard: a red battery icon means the charging system is no longer keeping up — stop as soon as it is safe and have it checked.
Electrical glitches: dashboard flickers, infotainment that reboots, electric windows slower than usual.
Stop-start that no longer cuts in: modern stop-start cars automatically disable the function when the battery is too weak to restart the engine.
If you suspect a car battery fault, visit your nearest MOTRIO garage. Our technicians will quickly diagnose your battery's health with a professional battery and charging circuit test and suggest the most suitable solution for your vehicle.
What voltage should a healthy car battery have?
A healthy 12V car battery should give the following voltage readings when measured with a multimeter:
Engine off, fully charged: 12.6V or higher.
Engine off, partially charged: 12.4–12.6V (still usable but worth a check).
Engine off, low charge: 12.0–12.4V (battery struggling, recharge or replacement recommended).
Engine off, below 12.0V: the battery is discharged or failing; the car may not start.
Engine running, alternator working: 13.7–14.7V (this is the alternator charging the battery).
Voltage alone doesn't tell the full story: a battery can show 12.6V at rest but still fail under load. A professional car battery test at a MOTRIO garage measures both the voltage and the cold cranking amps (CCA) — the real indicator of whether the battery can still start your engine.
When should I replace my car battery?
Replace your car battery when one or more of the following apply:
The battery is 4–5 years old (or 5–7 for AGM/EFB stop-start batteries), even if the car still starts.
The voltage at rest is below 12.4V and doesn't recover after a full charge.
The cold cranking amps (CCA) drop significantly below the value printed on the battery label.
The car needs a jump-start more than once in a short period.
The battery case is swollen, leaking or visibly damaged — replace immediately, do not attempt to charge.
At a MOTRIO garage, car battery replacement includes a free check of the charging circuit, fitting the new battery with terminal cleaning and protection, programming any battery-management module on modern cars (a critical step on stop-start and hybrid vehicles), and environmentally safe disposal of the old battery — all backed by a 1-year warranty on parts and labour.
