Wiper blades and visibility

xxServices MOB – Visibility

Wiper blades, windscreen repair, replacement & bulbs

Good visibility is one of the most important factors for safe driving — at night, in rain, in fog or on a sunny motorway. Worn wiper blades leave streaks that scatter light and reduce reaction time. A chipped or cracked windscreen can spread without warning, weaken the structure of the car and — in the UK — cause an automatic MOT failure. And a single failed headlight bulb is enough to get you stopped by police or to fail your MOT.

At MOTRIO garages we cover everything that keeps your view of the road sharp and your car legal: wiper blade replacement, windscreen chip repair, full windscreen replacement with approved adhesive, and headlight bulb replacement with alignment. We work on all makes and models, use parts that meet manufacturer standards and back every job with a 1-year warranty on parts and labour.

What other services does MOTRIO offer?

In addition to wipers, windscreens and bulbs, MOTRIO garages offer a full range of services for your vehicle. From regular maintenance to the braking system, from tyres to the battery:

  • MOT → pre-MOT inspection (wipers, lights and windscreen are MOT checkpoints)

  • Air conditioning → aircon regas and cabin filter for clear demisting

  • Battery → battery diagnosis (lights and wipers stress the battery)

  • Vehicle maintenance → full check-up and service

When should wiper blades be changed?

Wiper blades are made of natural rubber and deteriorate over time when exposed to the elements — UV rays, frost, road salt and grit all take their toll. As a general rule, we recommend changing them once a year, usually in autumn before the rainy season.

Signs of wear to look out for:

  • Obvious streaks on the windscreen after each pass.

  • Smearing or misting during operation, especially at low speeds.

  • Squeaking or chattering noise when the wipers are moving.

  • Sections of the windscreen left untouched by the blade, leaving water spots.

  • Visible cracks, splits or hardened rubber on the blade itself.

A wiper blade replacement at a MOTRIO garage takes only a few minutes: our technicians fit blades compatible with your vehicle and carry out a final operational test before you leave.

Can I drive with a cracked windscreen?

It is not recommended. Beyond obstructing visibility, a crack can spread quickly with vibration, temperature changes or a small impact and compromise safety. In the UK, a damaged windscreen can also result in an MOT failure — and driving with a cracked windscreen can be classed as ‘driving a vehicle in a dangerous condition' (3 points + a fine).

MOT-specific rules for windscreen damage:

  • Zone A (driver's direct line of sight, 290 mm wide centred on the steering wheel): any chip or crack larger than 10 mm causes MOT failure.

  • Rest of the swept area: damage larger than 40 mm causes MOT failure.

Many windscreen chips smaller than a £1 coin can be repaired with resin injection in around 30 minutes — much cheaper than a full replacement and often covered by your insurance with no impact on no-claims discount. If the chip is too large or in the driver's direct sight, a windscreen replacement is the safest option.

Should I repair or replace my windscreen?

Whether your windscreen can be repaired or needs full replacement depends on three things: the size of the damage, its location and its depth.

Repair is usually possible if:

  • The chip is smaller than a £1 coin (around 25 mm).

  • The chip is not directly in front of the driver (outside Zone A).

  • There is no contamination (dirt, water, ice) deep inside the chip.

  • The crack hasn't spread to the edge of the windscreen.

Replacement is needed when:

  • The damage exceeds the MOT thresholds (10 mm in Zone A, 40 mm elsewhere).

  • Cracks reach the edge of the windscreen (structural weakness).

  • The inner layer of laminated glass is damaged.

  • There are multiple chips in the same area.

A windscreen chip repair usually takes around 30 minutes; a full windscreen replacement takes 1 to 2 hours plus a minimum drive-away time for the adhesive to cure. At MOTRIO, both interventions are carried out with approved products and a written guarantee.

When should I replace my headlight bulbs?

A car headlight bulb doesn't always fail suddenly — it usually weakens gradually. Replace yours when you notice any of the following:

  • Dimmer light output than the other side, or compared with how it used to be.

  • Yellow, pink or amber colour on a halogen bulb (sign that the filament is wearing out).

  • Flickering or intermittent operation.

  • One bulb has just failed: replace both at the same time, as the second one is likely close to failing too.

  • After 2–3 years of use for halogen bulbs (LED and xenon last much longer).

Important: driving with a failed headlight is an offence in the UK and an automatic MOT failure. At a MOTRIO garage, bulb replacement includes the lighting check, the fitting (some modern cars require removing the bumper to access the bulb) and headlight alignment — a step often skipped that prevents dazzling other drivers and ensures full coverage of the road.
