What does a fuel filter do and when should it be changed?

The fuel filter traps impurities, particles and water in the fuel before they reach the injection system. It protects the injection pump and the injectors, which are sensitive. On a diesel, the fuel filter often includes a separator that splits water from the fuel.

How often to replace it depends on the manufacturer and how you use the car. As a rule, the diesel filter is changed every 20,000 to 40,000 km or once a year; some recent vehicles go up to 60,000 km. On a petrol, the filter often lasts longer and is sometimes built into the pump, with no scheduled maintenance. It is usually checked during a routine service.

Poor-quality fuel, water condensing in the tank or high mileage without maintenance all speed up clogging. Regularly driving with the tank nearly empty concentrates debris at the bottom and blocks the filter faster.

The filter's position varies from car to car. On many models it sits in the engine bay or under the car, near the tank, and the pump pushes the fuel through the filter before injection. On diesels, the fuel filter often includes a separator that collects water, which should be drained periodically, especially in winter.

Fuel quality makes a difference. Filling up at reputable stations reduces impurities, while poor diesel or condensation in the tank speeds up clogging. Regularly running the tank almost empty also concentrates debris at the bottom and pushes it towards the filter faster.

On petrol engines, besides the main filter, there is often a mesh strainer in the tank that is rarely replaced. On diesels, a dedicated light warns of water in the filter: it should be drained as soon as possible to avoid damaging the pump. Ignoring that light is among the most common causes of injection faults.

Signs of a clogged fuel filter

A blocked filter lets less fuel through, and the engine lets you know. The most common signs are a loss of power, especially under acceleration or uphill, hesitation, hard starting or even stalling, higher fuel consumption, sometimes exhaust smoke and the engine warning light coming on.

Ignoring these signs is not trivial. A filter that is too clogged can let impurities reach the injection and damage the injectors or pump, with a far higher bill. A breakdown on the road is also possible if the engine eventually stalls for lack of fuel supply. Worn parts here can also affect your MOT on the emissions side.

Prevention is simple. Stick to the intervals in your service book without waiting for symptoms, avoid running near empty and, on a diesel used mostly for short trips, ask to have the separator checked. A clean filter keeps the fuel pressure right and protects the pump and injectors.

Acting early is the best choice. A neglected filter can let impurities reach the injectors, with a repair far more involved than a simple replacement. At the garage, after the change, the fuel system is bled to remove any air bubbles that would make starting difficult.
